Immersive technologies: VR and AR

VR (Virtual Reality) is a 3D computer modeling and simulation to create a virtual world that people can interact with visually. Morton Heilig created the first VR device called Sensorama in 1957. The advanced VR device is capable of giving a visual or sensory experience of 3D worlds. Sony’s Play Station VR and Google’s World Sense Tracking are the recent VR devices that enable an individual to roam in and interact with a world that is different from reality. Steven Spielberg says, “We don’t have to walk even five feet to leave our world, just put something on our eyes and we are suddenly thrust into a world of someone’s imaginations”.

In AR (Augmented Reality) the real world is augmented with the digital world so that the digital 3D objects are overlaid in the real world. Imagine fitting virtual furniture in your room to see how it feels with your phone using Augmented Reality.

How AR and VR empower the metaverse:

AR and VR are the fastest growing and fascinating technologies which are being used as building blocks in the metaverse. AR and VR help create a fictitious environment that is shared with the internet in the metaverse. These immersive technologies have enabled metaverse to mimic any real world or imaginary environment into a digital world that is born out of the blockchain.

I believe the metaverse is the next chapter for the internet.

 Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta

There are many small metaverses “microverses” that are already operating on different chains. Just like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have their different users, these metaverse worlds are divided between different users. The giant tech companies realize that a rising tide lifts all ships so, instead of putting distributed struggle, they should rather join hands to build an open ecosystem to serve the users.

Conclusion

We are living in the first generation of the metaverse, also, the AR and VR technologies are not that advanced. As all these immersive technologies evolve, there will be increased interoperability depending on consumer demands. VR experience does not need us to walk to explore the environment, and in AR we can view the real world along with the digital object. Since Metaverse combines both of these technologies, there’s a dire need to build dedicated hardware equipment. Companies like Unity, Apple, and Microsoft are already working to accommodate all technological
